About the Program
The Damminix™ system is an effective; environmentally sound method of eliminating deer ticks. Individual property owners in the Pines, with very rare exception, have agreed to participate in this program. The green Damminix™ tubes you see on the ground, distributed throughout the Pines in April and July, contain cotton balls impregnated with permethrin. At the concentration applied permethrin is not toxic to mammals (neither you nor your pets).
Damminix™ is an excellent addition to any standard tick control program. It uses an approach to target the tick at the source: the mouse that carries it in its nymph stage. The mice gather the treated cotton, where it works in the rodent population by killing the ticks that may be carrying the spirochete that causes Lyme Disease. (The mouse is not harmed.) By targetting the tick early in its 2-year life cycle, Damminix™ works to prevent the tick population from reaching its adult (and reproductive) stage. For maximum effectiveness a third of the tubes are applied in April and the remaining two thirds are placed in July. You will therefore see more tubes after the July application.
The Pines Lyme Disease Control Program is not a government program and is supported exclusively by the community. Its leadership is comprised of volunteers and the committee is under the auspices of FIPPOA, which provides services for communication and fundraising. All contributions to this program are held separately and used solely for the fundng of its projects.
